A dog tag should be easy to read, sit comfortably on the collar, and not be too heavy or too large for your dog. Sounds simple, but there's more to choosing the right size than you might think. In this size guide, we explain which dog tag size suits which dog – with specific breed recommendations and practical tips.
The Three Standard Sizes
At Bark'n'Tag and most manufacturers, dog tags come in three standard sizes:
| Size | Diameter | Weight (approx.) | Engraving Space |
|---|---|---|---|
| S (Small) | 25 mm (1") | ~8 g | 2–3 lines per side |
| M (Medium) | 30 mm (1.2") | ~11 g | 3–4 lines per side |
| L (Large) | 35 mm (1.4") | ~15 g | 4–5 lines per side |
Which Size for Which Dog?
S – 25 mm (1"): Small Dogs (up to 10 kg / 22 lbs)
The smallest size is lightweight, subtle, and sits comfortably on the collar of small breeds. Despite its compact size, it offers enough space for a name and phone number.
Suitable Breeds:
- Chihuahua
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Maltese
- Miniature Pinscher
- Papillon
- Pomeranian
- Havanese
- Shih Tzu
- Toy Poodle
Also ideal for: Cats and kittens – the 25 mm tag is light enough for outdoor cats.
Tip: With small tags, keep the engraving short. Name + one phone number on the front is enough. Use the back for a second number.
M – 30 mm (1.2"): Medium Dogs (10–25 kg / 22–55 lbs)
The most popular size – suitable for the majority of dogs. It offers the perfect balance of readability and wearing comfort.
Suitable Breeds:
- Beagle
- Cocker Spaniel
- French Bulldog
- Pug
- Border Collie
- Australian Shepherd
- Shiba Inu
- Standard Schnauzer
- Whippet
- Brittany Spaniel
Tip: 30 mm offers enough space for a name, two phone numbers, and a short note like "allergies" or an address.
L – 35 mm (1.4"): Large Dogs (over 25 kg / 55 lbs)
The largest option for dogs with wide collars and a strong presence. Easy to read even from a slight distance.
Suitable Breeds:
- Labrador Retriever
- Golden Retriever
- German Shepherd
- Rottweiler
- Bernese Mountain Dog
- Rhodesian Ridgeback
- Doberman
- Husky
- Boxer
- Great Dane
Tip: With large dogs, you can fit more information on the tag – use the space for a full address or medical notes. Engraving inspiration: Engraving Ideas for Your Dog Tag.
Decision Help: Between Two Sizes?
If your dog falls right between two sizes, these questions can help:
Choose the smaller size if ...
- Your dog wears a narrow, lightweight collar
- You prefer minimal weight
- Only a name and one number need to be engraved
- Your dog is sensitive to dangling objects
Choose the larger size if ...
- You want to engrave a lot of text (address, medical info)
- Readability is the top priority (e.g., for older finders)
- Your dog wears a wide, sturdy collar
- You want the tag to double as a visible accessory
Common Mistakes When Choosing a Size
Mistake 1: Too large for small dogs
A 35 mm (1.4") tag on a 3 kg (6.6 lb) Chihuahua not only looks odd, it's also uncomfortable and bangs against their chin while walking.
Mistake 2: Too small for large dogs
A 25 mm (1") tag on a Bernese Mountain Dog disappears in the fur and is nearly impossible to read. In an emergency, the finder needs to be able to see the number quickly.
Mistake 3: Forgetting about the collar
The tag needs to match the collar. A wide leather collar can handle a larger tag; a thin nylon collar looks better with a smaller one.
Size and Engraving: What Fits Where?
| Tag Size | Front | Back |
|---|---|---|
| 25 mm (1") | Name + 1 phone number | 2nd phone number |
| 30 mm (1.2") | Name + 1 phone number | 2nd number + short info |
| 35 mm (1.4") | Name + 1 phone number | Address + 2nd number + note |
What About Growing Puppies?
Puppies grow fast – but the dog tag doesn't grow with them. Our recommendation:
- Start with the size that fits the adult dog. A Labrador puppy will quickly grow big enough for a 35 mm (1.4") tag.
- For tiny puppies: Start with 25 mm (1") and switch later. You'll be changing the collar several times anyway.
- Bundle advantage: With our Triple Bundles (all three sizes), you'll have the right tag for every life stage.
